Sometime around the year A.D. 30, in the Roman province of Palestine, an obscure Jewish carpenter named Jesus of Nazareth began to teach publicly and to proclaim the coming of the "Kingdom of God."
Mel Gibson brings this film, The Passion of The Christ, to the screens in the US on February 25th. After viewing the "making of" presentation, I was in awe. I had ignored most of the nonesense and fuss about the film.It was a Gibson film, so I knew I would go! Using Aramaic, Hebrew and Latin, the languages of the time, this controversial movie will most likely reach more people than the "Temptation of Christ" in 1988 and make more money, if the quality matches the hype. And from what I've seen, it does!. It shouldn't be compared to Temptation, in any other category, bit will be for the controversy alone. This began life as an 85 page script, with little conversation and an original plan to NOT include subtitles. The acting appears brilliant, the emotion real, and the production values incredible. Even the special effects are surprising in their authenticity. One intriguing note on pounding the crucifixion nail into Jesus' hand: Mel Gibson did it himself.
Gibson used $25 million of his own money to create this project, and major Hollywood studios wanted nothing to do with this most bankable star's take on the Christ story. Allegations of anti-Semitism from the Anti-Defamation League and other Jewish groups continue to create publicity and controversy. Personal smears at Gibson and his family have added to that publicity.
According to some Marketing experts the dedication of those involved could make this movie a box-office smash, an incredible concept for any typical independent religious movie. The potential for this, I think, was started by the "Left Behind" movie and series, which has had limited screen success. "Left Behind" was one of the first major publicity effort successes in mobilizing Christians to go to a Christian themed movie.
As Mel Gibson says "I want to show the humanity of Christ as well as the divine aspect. It's a rendering that for me is very realistic and as close as possible to what I perceive the truth to be."
