Madden Football 2002-Review

Having played all of the Madden Football games for PS1 and PS2 I was not expecting to see much difference from Madden 2000, 2001 and 2002. To say the least I was pleasantly surprised when I fired up 2002 and jumped directly into a quick game.
The first thing you notice with 2001 and 2002 is how much realism there is in the players, not only as they follow your key punches but also as they stand around and wait for your play selections. In 2002 I have seen the players "appear" to be having conversations with their team mates, opposing team members and even the referees. Increased mobility, facial features such as surprise and anger, and even eye blinkings add to the overall realism of the game.
The Franchise mode allows you to play as any one of the existing NFL teams. Or you can do what I did and try out the "Create a Team" option. There are numerous "in depth" functions and details for creating your team's uniforms that allowed for a real unique look for your team. Being from Renton, Washington I created the Renton Roughnecks, with sleek black uniforms and a brand new domed stadium, right here in downtown Renton!
The AI level (which is changeable in settings) is fairly difficult and quickly learns your passing/rushing habits and changes the opponent defense options to compensate. In previous games you could find one or two plays that always worked and soon it was 64 to 0 your favor.
Just like it's predecessors, Madden 2002, allows you to create your own players with user defined stats. One surprise I did like, was when I entered my name as a player, either Madden or Summeral would actually say my name as completing a pass or rush instead of "Number 58 rushes for 8 yards" "or "The quarterback really winged that in there…". From what I have found any name , of any starting player, is voiced over by either Madden or Summeral.
Never really being a Madden fan I quickly learned the locations of settings to turn the "Madden-isms" off and just play the game. Any football fan would do well to add Madden 2002 to their collection. And even if you choose not to play, you can still watch the game and in rare moments you could swear you were watching a real life live game.
